Beautiful for some, annoying for others, expression wrinkles are not unanimous. What are the different types of expression wrinkles and how can they be treated efficiently? Here’s everything you need to know.

How do expression wrinkles form?

Our daily emotions force us to use our facial muscles. For example, when smiling, thinking, being mad or surprised, our muscles contract, which in turn creates wrinkles or folds at the level of the epidermis. With time and repetition, the smooth aspect of the skin fades and wrinkles start appearing.

When do we start having wrinkles?

The cutaneous aging process starts in the early 20s. Right at that age, the skin’s elasticity starts diminishing. As time goes by, it becomes more and more difficult for our skin to maintain its smooth aspect after a muscle contraction. Even though this process is generalized, we are not all equal when it comes to cutaneous aging. In fact, heredity, our facial expressions and first and foremost our life hygiene (smoking, sun exposure, etc.) can speed up the cutaneous aging process.

Different types of expression wrinkles

Expression wrinkles appear on the areas of the face that are the most expressive – eye contour (crow’s feet), between the eyebrows (lion’s wrinkle), on the forehead or even around the mouth.

  • Perioral wrinkles

Perioral wrinkles are folds around the mouth. They are usually found on smokers or simply on people who inherited that trait.

  • Lion’s wrinkle

The lion’s wrinkle appears on individuals who tend to frown their eyebrows to think, when in doubt or mad. They correspond to one or multiple vertical lines between the eyebrows.

  • Wrinkles of the forehead

The wrinkles of the forehead are caused by expressions such as being surprised (we raise our eyebrows) or thinking (we contract the muscles of the forehead).

Treating expression wrinkles

Many solutions are available to treat expression wrinkles, but some processes are more efficient than others.

Neuromodulators injections

Injecting neuromodulators reduces muscle contraction by weakening the muscles responsible for expression wrinkles: the face looks rejuvenated and relaxed.

BOTOX® is the most well-known commercial brand when it comes to neuromodulators. BOTOX® COSMETIC is made of a purified and natural protein. It is the ideal product to treat wrinkles of the forehead, lion’s wrinkle and crow’s feet. Other neuromodulators such as Dysport and Xeomin can work depending on your situation and skin type.

Laser treatments

Some laser treatments enhance collagen production and tone up the skin. The results are quick to obtain, the procedure is non-surgical and injection-free. It is an interesting solution for those who want to avoid surgery and are looking for an innovative alternative.

The TITAN technology uses a harmless infrared light that heats up the dermis in depth, causing a collagen contraction. This method increases collagen production and therefore, it firms the skin. Result – a skin with more elasticity and less wrinkles since the folds were naturally reduced.

Want to reduce the appearing of your expression wrinkles? Aesthetics surgery such as lifts might not be the best solution for you – there are alternative treatment options that are much softer and natural. Laser treatments and neuromodulator injections will most definitely suit you. Do not hesitate to contact one of our professionals for more information.
